Women's Basketball - Game Report

Hi Folks,

Despite all the effort, the ultimate reward of a win still eludes us. It was not our best performance on Friday as we took on Ottawa, losing 65-47 in a game in which we never really challenged for the win. In fact it was almost a repeat of our previous engagement -- best described as "flat." Shooting 10 for 12 from the foul line was the only real positive stat on the game (with Brittany Moore going 9-10). In what was our worst 3-point shooting display of the season, we managed only 1 of 14 from behind the arc.

Saturday's game was a very different story, as we came out strong and intense -- both necessary in what was a very physical battle. Pushing Carleton to overtime, we still came up one point short, losing 66-65. The first quarter was a back and forth affair, with neither team able to open lead -- ending in an 18-18 tie. In the second quarter we actually opened the largest lead of the game (9) before Carleton brought it back to 3 at the half (36-33). Carleton immediately grabbed the lead as we began the third quarter eventually building a 4-point lead of their own heading into the fourth (49-45). Carleton extended their lead to as much as 8 before we battled back to tie the game at 59 at the end of regulation. Carleton managed 7 points in the frame to our 6.

Brittany Moore led all scorers with 21 points, while Liz Boag had a career high 17. Jill Wheat continued her excellent play, anchoring our defense and grabbing 16 rebounds, including 8 on the offensive glass.

While we remain mired in 7th place, we are still only 2 points out of 6th and 4 points out of 5th. Our five remaining games are all at home. Six teams make the playoffs. We are still very much in the hunt and performances like Saturday will result upcoming wins!

Up Next at Home:
Friday, February 4 vs Toronto 6pm
Sat., February 5 vs Ryerson 6pm

OTTAWA (January 28, 2011) The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team's struggles continued Friday asthey dropped their fifth straight game losing 65-47 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Queen's record slips to 3-13 and they drop to seventh place in the OUA East Division, two points behind Laurentian. The Gaels last win was against Laurentian which was back on January 7th.

In front of a home crowd, Gee-Gee's Hannah Sunley-Paisley of Toronto recorded her 11th double-double of the season pouring in 22 points and 10 rebounds. Sunley-Paisley has tallied five straight double-double performances which started against the Gaels back on January 15th with 13 points and 14 boards.

Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., was Queen's top scorer with 18 points in the game and was the only Gael to break double digits. Hanna Koposhynska of Toronto finished with eight points and three rebounds.

Other Gee-Gee's breaking the 10 point barrier included Jenna Gilbert of Ottawa, with 14 points and Kim Cupid of Toronto, who tallied 10 points.

Sunley-Paisley was the game's top rebounder with 10.

Next up for the Gaels they will face the Carleton Ravens (14-2) in Ottawa tomorrow evening. Carleton is on a 10 game winning streak and sits comfortably in first place of the OUA East with 28 points.

Queen's pushes No. 4 Carleton to overtime, fall 66-65

OTTAWA (January 29, 2011) - Desperate for a win, the Queen's Gaels women's basketball team pushed the No. 4 Carleton Ravens to the limit, but fell short losing 66-65 in a heartbreaking overtime loss in Ottawa on Saturday.

Kingston's Liz Boag posted a career high 17 points in the loss while Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., led both teams in scoring posting 21 points for the Gaels.

Jill Wheat of Marwayne, Alta. registered 16 boards in the contest and was the games only double digit rebounder

The loss was the Gaels sixth straight and puts their record at 3-14 and they are in seventh place of the OUA East Division. Sixth place Laurentian, who holds the final playoff position in the East, lost 66-53 to Toronto on Saturday and maintain their two point lead on the Gaels.

Three Ravens finished with double digits, led by Ashleigh Cleary of Kemptville, Ont., who recorded 17 points and eight rebounds.

Queen'shad the advantage on the boards, grabbing 51 rebounds to Carleton's 46.

The Gaels jumped out to an early lead but the Ravens battled back and a successful shot by Cleary at the buzzer tied the game at 18 after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Gaels found success at the three-point line in the second, thanks in large part to Moore, who sits fifth in OUA scoring. She had the hot hand for Queen's, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and scoring 15 first-half points.

With her help, the Gaels went up by as much as nine in the second quarter. A late three by Krista Van Slingerland of Waterloo, Ont., pulled the Ravens within three at the half, down 36-33.

A couple of quick baskets by the Ravens to open the third gave them the lead, which they would maintain for the entire quarter, going into the fourth up 49-45.

Carleton continued to build on its momentum and would go up by as much as eight in the fourth. But the Gaels crept back into the game and thanks to some successful foul shots with the clock winding down, they tied the game at 59 and forced overtime.

With the game tied at 65 and 14 seconds on the clock, Raven Kendall MacLeod of Brockville, Ont., made one of two foul shots, giving Carleton a one-point lead. Queen's was unable to get the winning basket in the dying seconds, giving the Ravens the win.

Carleton's record now stands at 15-2 for first place in the OUA East.

The Gaels return home next weekend looking to break their six game losing streak against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday (Feb. 4) and Ryerson Rams on Saturday (Feb. 5). Both games tip off at 6:00pm inside the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) on campus at Queen's University.

NOTES: Boag in her first season with the Gaels previous career high came back on November 27 vs. Western... Tonight, Boag was seven of 10 from th field and three of four from behind the three-point arc.

Curling (M) - FISU Update: Sunday, January 30

Well it was a 3 win day for the Canadian curlers today.  The gırls beat Poland and China and the guys won 9-2 in 7 versus Norway (and yes they had "the pants"). We controlled the match from the onset wınnıng the draw to the button for hammer before blankıng the fırst, takıng 2 ın the second followed by a steal of 4 when the Norweıgen skıp came up well lıght on a wıde draw to the four foot.  The game was never ın questıon after thıs.  It was a great bounce back game for us and much needed after yesterday.  There were a few upsets ın the matches today (atleast ın our mınds) wıth the Czechs knockıng off the Swıss and USA poundıng Sweden ın 6.
Standıngs after 4 games:
Korea   4-0
Swıtz.  3-1
Czechs 3-1
GB       3-1
Canada 2-2
USA     2-2
Sweden 2-2
Norway  1-3
Slovenıa 0-4
Turkey   0-4
Tomorrow we take on Sweden ın the mornıng and Slovenıa ın the evenıng.
We got a chance to wıtness a medal today ın short track speed skatıng as the mens 5km relay team won Silver after the Korean who were leadıng crashed wıth only 2 laps to go!  After watchıng short track the past 2 days I have to say that ıt ıs defınıtely one of the most excıtıng sports to watch lıve!  The ladıes relay team came 4th comıng just behınd the Hungarıans.
Thats all for today, ıts another early mornıng tomorrow!

Team Canada Curling Update - Saturday, Jan. 29

So, fırst the good news - Canada won two medals yesterday both ın short track speed skatıng and the gırls curlıng team won theır only match of the day agaınst the Czechs.

As for our team we had a dısappoıntıng day losıng both our matches to the Swıss and the Czechs.

The Swıss sent a very strong team and even though we out curled them 81-80 we ended up on the wrong sıde of a 7-6 decısıon.  We had hammer tıed comıng home and on the Swıss skıp,s last there was one guard just off centre and he made a beautıful draw behınd ıt full four.  We needed a pıece of the button and came up a touch lıght.

In between games we headed out to the speed skatıng venue and took ın some actıon there...the Canadıan speed skaters look really strong.

Our nıght match was extremely frustratıng because we were clearly the better team but we just dıdnt execute at the same level we have ın our fırst two games.  They played extremely defensıvely whıch at the tıme frustrated us and the critical ends were the 7th and 8th when we mıssed a routıne shot for 3 and then rolled out on a nose hıt to force them to one.

We stayed after the game for a mını practice that we are allowed at the end of the day to prepare for our only match of today against Norway.

I,m not sure ıf there ıs anywhere to see the standıngs online so here they are:

1) Korea      3-0
1) Swıtz      3-0
3) GB         2-1
3) Sweden  2-1
3) Czechs   2-1
6) CANADA 1-2
6) Norway

Men's Soccer - Squash Ladder

As part of our off-season training, we've incorporated a squash ladder to improve players' speed and agility.

Below are the rules of the ladder, rules of play, and current standings.

Ladder Rules:

- Any player can challenge another player 5 or less places above their ranking

- The lower ranked player should provide 2 time options for playing. If they are not suitable the higher ranked player must provide another time that is suitable to the challenger.

- Playing time options should be weekdays between 5pm-9pm unless agreed otherwise by the players.

- When a higher ranked player beats a lower ranked player the standings remain unchanged.

- When lower ranked player B beats a higher ranked player A, player B takes player A’s position and player moves down 1 rank

- A player must play at least one game every 2 weeks or they will drop 1 rank

- Results must be submitted to me as soon as possible

- The challenger will submit the score copying in the player they just played.

Rules of Play:

- Matches are best out of 5 games.

- Points are scored on your serve only.

- At the beginning of the game or when the service changes the server can choose either side to start serving from.

- Games will be up to 9 points unless there is a tie at 8-8 and then a player must win by 2 clear points e.g. 11-9.

- Matches should be played with a yellow double-dot ball.

- Protective eye wear is recommended per the ARC guidelines.

This is the most UP-TO-DATE standings as of March 10th, 2010.

Men's Soccer - Off-season Training

Hello Gaels Men's Soccer supporters,

I wanted to apologize for the time between this post and my last. After losing the OUA quarter-final match to U of T in heartbreaking fashion, I took some time away to reflect on our season. What could we have done differently? Were we as prepared as we should have been? Did we have the right game plan going into the game? Should we have taken a different approach? These questions, and so many more, were racing through my mind. In the end, I was happy with our game plan, and the way our guys executed it on the pitch. We were 6 minutes away from another berth to the OUA Championships. Unfortunately, that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. Regardless, the season is over, and a new phase has begun.

Off-season training is an opportunity for players to improve physically. They need, and will become quicker, faster, and stronger individuals. In addition, with the right approach and commitment, they will become mentally tougher - an important attribute to have in high-pressure situations. I have worked closely with Rodney, our Strength and Conditioning Coach, to develop an off-season training regimen that will challenge our players, and improve every aspect of their movement - balance, coordination, speed, strength, agility. We have futsal training twice-a-week, Complete Athlete Conditioning once-a-week, strength training twice-a-week, and, new this year, we've incorporated squash as a part of their training regimen.

We will be better next season - I'm confident of that. While we will be graduating quality upper-year players, we have a talented group of young players eager to hit the pitch again in August. With a strong 2011 recruiting class, we will be sure to compete at the provincial stage and national stage.

One final note. Over the next few months, I will be posting our squash ladder results. This is so the squad is kept up-to-date on standings, and who their next challenger might be.

Best of luck to all Gaels teams currently in-season. Go Gaels Go!

Chris

Perseverance Pays Off

We just got back from our longest road trip of the year. Last Thursday we trained from 5:30 to 7pm, and then hit the road (with our women's team) at 7:30, for the trek to London. Nasty weather turned a 5 hour drive into 6 and a bit and we arrived a little after 1:00am. A lovely manor in the wooded hills of Western was our home for 2 nights, and it included a great buffet breakfast and a little sojourn back to nature. At 2:00pm we reboarded the bus for Windsor, dropped the girls at 4:15 and then headed to the box stores for some shopping and a pre-game meal. Back to the gym at 6 to cheer on the girls, in what turned out to be a 5-setter, pushing our start back to 8:40, rather than the scheduled 8pm. No problem. We are used to that. Get ready and wait. It was fan appreciation day in Windsor and the Lancer fans were very rowdy. We needed to stay focused. What great preparation for the playoffs, with fans in our face and testing our ability to tune out. I was very proud of our players as they didn't engage with the crowd. It actually didn't phase them. The team did a good job in tough conditions and we were out of there in an hour and 7 minutes, with a 3-0 victory. Showers, a quick food stop and back on the road. We hit the pillows at 1:30am back in London. I was asleep at 1:31, I think. 9:30am came quickly. Luggage in the bus, breakfast til 10 and then into cabs as we were off to a local high school for passing practice and our game plan session about Western, who we knew would be a much tougher opponent. They were ranked #6 in the CIS and we were #9. We lost 3-0 to them in the pre-season, and 3-2 in our gym in the first half of the regular season. The chatter in the volleyball circles was that it was the game to watch. That speculation turned out to be right. It doesn't get any more entertaining. It was a great match. Even in the first set at 21, we managed to control the last stretch and won 25-23. In the second, we struggled with our passing and serving and Western led by 2 or 3 almost the entire set, taking it 25-22. In the third we again were unable to mount the type of attack we wanted to, due to too many passes at the 3m line, and Western took the set 25-23, and a 2-1 lead.
I don't know what it is about our team, but time and again, when our backs have been to the wall like that, we have responded well. I hate counting on that and I do think we are good enough to not let that happen, but once again, it did. We fought back in the fourth, and were actually leading 21-14 at one point. At 22-16 we got a card for 'excessive cheering'. Even with the free point that made it 22-17, we didn't let down... winning the 4th 25-21. The fifth was a barn-burner. We almost gave it away. Containing Western's rightside and serving well were both challenges. We were down 14-12 and 15-14 and ultimately won the match 18-16. Thank goodness I have a good hairdresser, because these lads continue to give me gray hairs. 11:00pm, back in the bus with 2 'W's under our belt. 2.5 hours of driving, a quick pit stop at Whitby and home at 4:40am after some heroic driving in nasty conditions from our driver, Ivan. Ah, the life of a varsity athlete/coach. Coach, "do we still have spin class tomorrow.... I mean today (since it was 4am). Yes, absolutely. 5pm at the ARC, just 55minutes of go, go, go. After all with winning comes the responsibility to keep winning, and our goal is to be better tomorrow than we were yesterday. We will host the U of T Varsity Blues this Friday night at 8pm, and I hope you will all come out and support the Gaels as we move one step closer to our goal of winning our 6th OUA title, since 2000.

Women's Basketball -- Game Reports

Hi Folks,

We let one slip away this weekend, losing in overtime to Ryerson, 74-64. After playing a pretty solid first half, and opening the second half very well (building a 17 point lead), a change in Ryerson's defense and a lack of execution on our part, led to the downfall. During second half, we committed 14 turnovers, gave up 10 offensive rebounds, and put Ryerson on the foul line 29 times. The (same) numbers in the first half were 10, 5 & 12.

On Saturday, I thought we battled hard in the first half -- Toronto pulling ahead to double digit leads two or three times and us, clawing our way back into the game, bringing it back to single digits -- but never getting closer than the 7 point spread at half (32-25). Different story in the second half as we were absolutely steam-rolled and we had little left in the tank to battle back. The final, 82-48 -- ouch!

At this point in the season, we will now face our east division rivals for the second time, beginning with Ottawa & Carleton this weekend. We have certainly dug ourselves into a deep hole in league standing, but have shown the capability of playing very good basketball...........at times. Now is the time for us to play our best basketball -- we will see if we are up to the challenge.

Up Next on the Road:
Friday, January 28 @ Ottawa 6pm
Sat., January 29 @ Carleton 6pm

Mens Hockey 2nd Half

First off I want to appologize for not keeping up to my blog. The first half was a very trying half for us as a team and I put all my efforts in trying to right the ship. We have struggled with consistency all season long in all aspects of our game. Over the Christmas break we went out and brought Patrick McEachen in from the Majors in the OHL to add depth to our blueline. He is getting better every game and is adjusting the rigors of University life. I want to "Thank" all 25 Alumni who came to our Alumni event at Varsity Arena last week. It was a very entertaining game and any chance we get to beat U of T makes our Alumni very happy. The second half is now into week 4 and we are 4-2. We will need to put a streak of wins together to make the climb up the tough OUA East standings. We have dug ourselves a deep hole in the first half but the guys are responding well to the challenge. We are off to Ryerson for another big game Saturday at 2pm at the George Bell arena.

Women's Basketball - Game Reports

Hi Folks,

It was quite the battle - Q's vs Carleton. With 21 lead changes, the outcome of the game was not solidified until 0.00 registered on the clock. Unfortunately it was Carleton that finished with the 2 point advantage, 64-62.

The Carleton game also seemed to drain us mentally, as our performance in the first half against Ottawa was less than stellar. We dug ourselves into a 16 point hole by half and were only able to recover 2 of those points in the second half to fall 71-57. Detailed game reports are below, so I will jump to the next subject.

In our efforts to attract more than 100 donors contributing $100 or more, with an overall goal of raising $10,000, I am pleased to report that we have just climbed to 80% of our goal. KINGSTON, Ont. (January 15, 2011) The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team struggled out of the gate losing 71-57 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in Kingston.

The loss is the Gaels second in as many games and they currently hold a 1-5 record at home. Queen's falls to 3-10 and are in a tie for sixth place of the OUA East with Laurentian at six points. The Gaels are two points behind Ryerson for fifth place. The win pushes Ottawa's record to 8-4 and they sit in third place with 16 points.

Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., broke double digit in scoring for the eighth consecutive game with 20 points. It's also the third time she has recorded 20 points this season and she was the game's leading scorer.

Hannah Sunley-Paisley of Toronto was Ottawa's top player recording a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds including nine defensive boards.

Ottawa opened with a 7-0 run before the Gaels got on board when Moore registered two points on foul shots. Ottawa would increase the lead to 11 points in the first quarter at 21-10. The Gee-Gees continued the pressure in the second quarter taking a 39-23 into the half.

Queen's would go on to win the next two quarters (18-17 and 16-15) but the first half damage was too much to overcome leading to a final of 71-57.

Paige Robinson of Calgary posted 14 points in the loss while Hanna Koposhynska of Toronto tallied 12. Koposhynska also led the Gaels with five rebounds.

Tatianna Hanlan of Gatineau, Que., was Ottawa's top scorer with 16 points. She was followed by Sunley-Paisley with 13, Jenna Gilbert of Ottawa with 12 and Sarah Nolette of Edmonton who had 11.

Gee-Gee's Kimberly Cupid of Toronto had an all around strong performance recording nine points, six assists and five steals. She was also the shortest player on the court standing at 5'2 grabbing nine rebounds which was the second highest to Sunley-Paisley.

The Gaels will hit the road for four games over the next two weeks with their first match coming against Ryerson on Jan. 21. Queen's will return home on Feb. 4 against Toronto.

Women's Basketball - Game Report

Hi Folks,

Our return to league play following our success at the Concordia Tournament did not go exactly as planned. After playing some pretty good basketball in Montreal, we were completely ineffectual up in Sudbury against Laurentian. I am baffled by the extreme swing in our performances, as are our players. It would be easy to chalk it up to the youth (and injuries) of our team, but we have gained enough experience throughout the fall schedule that we should not fall prey to these lapses – another work in progress.

Laurentian beat us in every statistical category and were full value for the throttling (74-50). Brittany Moore managed 11 points despite not being fully healthy, while Liz Boag added 10. Hanna Koposhyska hit double digits in the rebounding category with 11.

York was a very different style game and our performance was significantly better. At Laurentian we managed only 19 points in the first half. At York we put up 19 in the first quarter and added another 25 in the second quarter to grab a 44-31 half time lead. We struggled in the third quarter, with only 9 points (to York’s 13), but recovered in the fourth to score 18 (along with York’s 18), finishing with a 71-62 win. We shot the ball extremely well from all areas, 52% from the floor, 58% from beyond the arc, and 77% from the foul line. Kopshynska had a career high game in points, dropping 20 on 9-14 shooting and 2-2 from the line. Paige Robinson hit for 12, while Moore added 11 and Jill Wheat had a double double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Injury Update: It looks like we will be moving forward with only 9 players as injury reports on Rachael Urosevic and Jordan Tomas have not been favourable. Both will continue to rehab stress fractures in their feet through the winter term. Meaghan MacDougall will undergo knee surgery this week, and Christine Wallace continues to rehab her knee surgery from mid-December.

Web site Update: We are in the process of moving the current queensbasketball.net onto the gogaelsgo.com web site. I apologize if you have received an error message when visiting the queensbasketball.net site -- soon it will move you to the new site -- just a bit of a glitch in the timing. We will be continuing to get all the information previously on the .net site to the gogaelsgo.com site as soon as possible.
