Women's Basketball - Game Report

Hi Folks,

Happy New Year!

We closed out 2010 with a Bronze Medal at the Concordia Tournament in Montreal. We are still playing with a short bench, dressing only 9 (of our 13) players due to injuries. (Game write-ups, complete with box scores to follow)

We opened the tournament with a 75-70 win over Bishop's, riding Brittany Moore's 31 point performance. We built a 4 point lead at the end of the first quarter that we never relinquished. Hanna Koposhynska dropped 12 points, while Jill Wheat and Paige Robinson added 11.

The semi-final pitted us against UBC. We trailed by 3 after one, but the second quarter was our undoing. Trailing by 14 at the half, we could never get closer than 10, eventually settling for the 14 point loss, 77-63. Moore led the way again with 18 points, while Koposhynska added 10 points and 9 boards.

The Bronze medal game was a re-match with Memorial University. As you may recall we lost the first two games versus them in Newfoundland, before winning the third. It was a game without "Brittanys", as their second leading scorer, Brittany Dalton, and our leading scorer, Brittany Moore, were both sidelined with injuries. None-the-less, we dominated the first half of the game, rolling up a 45-19 half time lead. It did come at a cost, however, as Jill Wheat was involved in a three-way collision that sidelined her with a neck injury (after only 10 minutes of play). With only 7 players healthy for the second half, one of whom fouled out (and two others with 4 fouls), we hung on to win 69-59. Koposhynska had another great game, dropping 18 points and grabbing 9 boards. She was named a tournament all-star.
